GROWING THE PROFESSION

A key FP Canada™ goal is to increase the number of financial planners to meet the financial planning needs of all Canadians.

2021 achievements include:

  • Your Career in Financial Planning, a new program to help aspiring financial planners envision their future as professional planners, with “day-in-the-life” accounts from CFP professionals and QAFP professionals (see a sample video here)
  • A new Educator Toolkit to help educators communicate the value of a career in financial planning and promote their FP Canada-approved courses leading to FP Canada’s financial planning certifications
  • Approval of new post-secondary education programs and courses leading to financial planning careers at McMaster University and Conestoga College

PROMOTING PROFESSIONAL FINANCIAL PLANNING TO CANADIANS

FP Canada continued to raise Canadians’ awareness about the value of professional financial planning. Resources include:

  • Media Ambassador Program – professional financial planners participate in media interviews to help Canadians learn about the benefits of working with CFP professionals and QAFP professionals
  • Consumer articles created by Media Ambassadors, published on Financial Planning for Canadians website
  • Find a Planner Tool– to locate a professional financial planner or verify a planner’s certification status
  • Social media– news updates and information

Consumer research

Consumer research provides insights on the benefits of financial planning.

  • The 2021 Financial Stress Index found that even in the middle of the pandemic, Canadians who worked with a professional financial planner were far less likely to cite money as their top concern (23% vs. 39%)

SUPPORTING THE PROFESSION

FP Canada supports professional financial planners to enhance their practice by developing new education programs, tools and other resources to meet emerging needs, and through ongoing collaboration with its industry partners and other stakeholders.


  • New CFP Professional and QAFP Professional Toolkits with resources for planners to promote their professional designation, strengthen their practice and support their clients
  • Collaboration with partners in the profession, including the Financial Standards Planning Board and the Institut québécois de planification financière
  • Engagement with industry to support planners and promote professional financial planning

FINANCIAL PLANNING WEEK

FP Canada’s 2021 Financial Planning Conference during Financial Planning Week was a huge success. A record number of professional financial planners, industry leaders, regulators and educators logged into the comprehensive virtual conference from across the country.
  • 1,942 attendees – highest attendance ever
  • 12% increase in ticket sales
  • 54% increase in repeat attendees
  • 95% of attendees said they will attend again

2021 DONALD J. JOHNSTON LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Cary List, CFP, FP Canada™ Fellow, was awarded the prestigious Donald J. Johnston Lifetime Achievement Award, FP Canada’s highest honour. The award, named after the late Donald J. Johnston, who led FP Canada’s predecessor organization, recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions with lasting impact to the financial planning profession in Canada.

Mr. List, a champion of financial planning as a key determinant in the financial well-being of Canadians, retired from FP Canada as President & CEO in 2021, after 15 years in that role. He led FP Canada’s major growth in size and stature, including the transition from Financial Planning Standards Council to FP Canada. He also led the creation of the FP Canada Institute™, the redesign of the CFP certification and education program, and the development of QAFP certification to make financial planning more accessible for all Canadians.

2021 FP CANADA FELLOW

Lesley Poole, CFP, was awarded the FP Canada Fellow distinction which recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to advance professional financial planning in Canada.

Ms. Poole, who is the President of Next Chapter Financial Planning and Transition coaching, has worked for over 40 years as a financial planner. She has also managed teams of financial planners for CIBC and HSBC. Ms. Poole has been a volunteer with FP Canada since 2014. She is the current Chair of the FP Canada Standards Council™ Standards Panel. She has also provided support for exam development and contributed to the development of the FP Canada Institute Professional Education Program’s Advanced Certificate in 3H Financial Planning™.

FP CANADA FOUNDATION RESEARCH AND RESOURCES

The FP Canada Research Foundation™ is an independent registered charity dedicated to funding financial planning research to enhance the well-being of all Canadians. The Foundation funds, promotes and disseminates research to financial planners to enhance their practice, as well as to academic partners and consumers.

 

The Foundation provides funding for:

  1. technical research that examines current practices in financial planning and provides evidence for financial planning strategies and decision-making models to help financial planners provide informed and effective advice to their clients
  2. behavioural research that examines the impact of human behaviour on effective financial planning
  3. societal research that examines the benefits of financial planning for society as a whole.
