The results of the eighth Financial Stress Index reveal that while financial stress continues to rise year over year, Canadians who seek professional help with their finances are feeling increasingly hopeful about their financial futures.

FP Canada publishes the annual Financial Stress Index to gain insight into factors causing Canadians financial stress—and the extent to which CFP® professionals and QAFP® professionals are helping them improve their financial well-being.

Key Findings

Money remains the top source of stress for Canadians. This year’s numbers represent a steady increase over the past five years, from 38% in 2021 to 42% in 2025.

  • Nearly half (49%) of Canadians still lose sleep over financial stress, but this number remains lower than it was at the height of the pandemic (51% in 2021).
  • Over two-thirds (64%) say grocery prices is the top external factor that’s directly impacting their finance-related stress, and over half (54%) say the same of inflation.

Canadians who work with a financial professional, such as a CFP professional or QAFP professional, are more likely to feel hopeful about their financial futures (50% felt hopeful in 2023, 56% in 2024, and 60% in 2025) than those who don’t (44% in 2023, and 48% in 2024 and 2025).

Here are a few more numbers to consider:

  • Those who work with a financial professional are less likely to say money is their top source of stress than those who don’t (34% vs. 48%)
  • Those who work with a financial professional are less likely to lose less sleep over financial worries than those who don’t (42% vs. 53%)
