Canadians should feel confident about the advice they get from QAFP® professionals and CFP® professionals given the high bar for certification and strong professional standards.

FP Canada™ is committed to ensuring that all Canadians have access to financial planning advice from professional financial planners who are competent and act in an ethical manner.

To that end, the FP Canada Standards Council™ sets, maintains and enforces financial planning standards, sets the certification requirements for financial planners certified by FP Canada, and develops and delivers certification exams.

The FP Canada Standards Council ensures Certified Financial Planner® professionals and Qualified Associate Financial Planner™ professionals meet appropriate standards of competence and professionalism through rigorous requirements of education, exam, experience and ethics.

QAFP professionals and CFP professionals must agree to comply with the Standards of Professional Responsibility as a condition to new and continued certification. Failure to comply with the standards can result in professional discipline, with sanctions that range from a letter of admonishment to suspension or revocation of certification.

QAFP professionals and CFP professionals are required to strictly adhere to the principles set out in the Standards of Professional Responsibility including, for example, to act with honesty and integrity, to respect confidentiality, and to put their clients’ interests first.

Commitment to high standards

As a QAFP professional or CFP professional, you are accountable to high standards of practice, conduct and competence throughout your career. You must commit to maintain strong professional ethics, and to demonstrate the care, skill and diligence expected of all professionals.

FP Canada Standards Council Standards of Professional Responsibility

The Standards of Professional Responsibility include four sets of standards:

Code of Ethics

The expected standard of ethical behaviour with which all QAFP professionals and CFP professionals must comply.

Fitness Standards

The good character requirements for new and continued QAFP certification and CFP certification.

Rules of Conduct

The behaviour that clients and members of the public can expect from QAFP professionals and CFP professionals.

Practice Standards

The required process for any client engagement where financial planning services are being offered.
