Once you have earned QAFP® certification or CFP® certification, you need to renew your certification with FP Canada™ every year to retain your right to use the QAFP marks or CFP marks.

Renewing your certification includes keeping your knowledge and competence current by taking a required number of continuing education courses annually. FP Canada’s continuing education requirements add value to your certification, and reinforce to your clients and colleagues that you are at the forefront of your field.

Renew your certification

To renew your certification, you must meet the requirements set out in the QAFP Certification Policies or CFP Certification Policies:

  • adhere to FP Canada Standards Council™ Standards of Professional Responsibility
  • complete your continuing education requirements for the previous year
    • QAFP certification – 12 hours that includes at least one credit in the Professional Responsibility category       
    • CFP certification – 25 hours that includes at least two credits in the Professional Responsibility
  • use the QAFP marks or CFP marks according to the QAFP Marks Usage Guide or the CFP Marks Usage Guide
  • complete your certification renewal application and submit it for approval
  • pay your annual certification fee by the deadline
    • QAFP certification – July 31
      • renewal applications received between the deadline and September 30 will be subject to late fees
      • renewal applications received after September 30 will be subject to a reinstatement fee in addition to the annual certification fee
    • CFP certification – March 31
      • renewal applications received between the deadline and May 31 will be subject to late fees
      • renewal applications received after May 31 will be subject to a reinstatement fee in addition to the annual certification fee
  • not be subject to an Order by an FP Canada Standards Council Hearing Panel or Appeal Panel prohibiting renewal
  • be approved by FP Canada for renewal
 
 

Continuing education

Once you have gained QAFP certification or CFP certification, you must ensure your knowledge and competence stay current by meeting continuing education requirements every year.

Reinstate your certification

QAFP professionals and CFP professionals with cancelled or lapsed certifications can reinstate them within five years of their last certification expiration date.
