What’s changing in securities licencing

Beginning January 2026, the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (CIRO) is implementing a new approach to securities registration by putting into action a new exam-based proficiency model. This means individuals will no longer be required to complete mandatory coursework before writing any of the registration exams.

Preparing for registration as an Investment Representative (IR) or Registered Representative (RR)

  • Individuals pursing RR registration must also pass the Retail Securities Exam, which focuses on the knowledge and competencies required to assess suitability and make securities recommendations to clients.
