FP Canada accredits continuing education activities because they are essential for CFP® professionals and QAFP® professionals to maintain their certification.

Ongoing education ensures financial professionals stay current on financial planning and broader financial services developments so they can better provide clients with real-world, actionable, and relevant advice.

Visit our CE Requirements page for more information.

Accredited continuing education

Over 19,000 CFP professionals and QAFP professionals collectively complete more than 450,000 CE credits each year. Financial Planning and Professional Responsibility credits must be accredited by FP Canada.

To be eligible for accreditation by FP Canada, CE activities must meet the standards set out in the FP Canada Continuing Education Accreditation Policy. Our CE Accreditation Policy supports the public interest while recognizing the diverse needs of the financial planning profession.

Once CE is accredited, it can be listed in the FP Canada CE Store.

CE categories

FP Canada’s CE is organized into three credit categories:

  • Financial Planning – CE in this category must be accredited and relate to one or more areas of the FP Canada Standards Council Competency Profiles for CFP certification or QAFP certification. These profiles cover the six fundamental financial planning areas, professional skills, and knowledge of human behaviour as set out in the FP Canada Body of Knowledge. CE on diversity, equity, and inclusion also qualifies in this category.
  • Professional Responsibility – CE in this category must directly relate to and demonstrate the application of the professional responsibility expectations for CFP professionals and QAFP professionals, as defined in the FP Canada Standards Council Standards of Professional Responsibility. Professional Responsibility CE must be pre-accredited by FP Canada before it is offered or delivered to CFP professionals or QAFP professionals. Post-delivery accreditation is not available.
  • General CE – CE in this category may not need to be accredited by FP Canada to meet CE requirements, but accreditation provides certainty that the activity qualifies.

NOTE: CE previously accredited under the Practice Management or Product Knowledge categories now falls within the General CE category. Practice Management CE covers skills for building client relationships and growing a professional practice, such as business planning, development, networking, or sales, while Product Knowledge covers understanding specific financial services products.

FP Canada approved by CIRO as a third-party accreditor for continuing education

More than 40% of financial planners certified by FP Canada also hold mutual fund licenses. FP Canada has been approved by the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (CIRO) as a Third-Party Accreditor under the Mutual Fund Dealer (MFD) CE Program. CE providers may apply to FP Canada for FP Canada accreditation and/or Mutual Fund Dealer Continuing Education (MFD CE) accreditation. In accordance with the policies set by CIRO for the MFD CE program, MFD accreditation is valid for two years.

CE activities accredited for both FP Canada and MFD CE requirements provide benefits for CE providers and professional financial planners, as financial planners can use these activities to meet CE requirements for both MFD and FP Canada.
