Panel members are CFP professionals from across Canada. They have expertise in all areas of financial planning and represent a wide range of financial planning practices.  

The exam panels review, evaluate and approve exam content before each exam to ensure it:

Each exam panel ensures that:  

  • the exam assesses the competence of candidates for certification by requiring them to demonstrate the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities
  • individuals who are qualified receive a passing score and candidates who are not qualified receive a failing score

CFP professionals volunteer to help develop new exam cases and questions, which the exam panels review for appropriateness, currency and accuracy. Exam questions focus on specific elements of the exam’s respective competency profile, and answers may require integrating several financial planning areas to address clients’ diverse needs and financial planning situations.

  • The exam includes 95 stand-alone and case-based multiple-choice questions

CFP exam overview

  • The exam includes stand-alone, multiple-choice, and case-based constructed response questions
  • You’ll find the details about what you’ll be tested on, exam structure, and the percentage value assigned to competencies in the FP Canada Blueprint: CFP Examination
  • The exam is six hours long with three sections of two hours each and two breaks
    • in-person locations:  
      • a 30-minute break between sections 1 and 2
      • a 30-minute break between sections 2 and 3
    • online proctoring:
      • a 15-minute break between sections 1 and 2
      • a 15-minute break between sections 2 and 3
